When I was growing up, I believed the saying “Spare the rod, spoil the child” was about disciplining children.
As I’ve matured, I’ve come to understand that this saying is not about discipline. Rather, it emphasizes the importance of continually teaching our children the word of God.
Our society has increasingly removed God’s word from public education. Public and personal prayer have been excluded from gatherings to such an extent that, in some countries, even silent prayer is banned.
As a result, society has lost its direction. Many people pursue things that fail to satisfy, leaving them unhappy, lonely, anxious, and depressed. To address this, we as individuals must be the solution.
Individually, we need to return to raising our children with the word of God as a foundation in their lives. Modern-day prophets consistently stress the importance of daily prayer and scripture study.
By inviting our Heavenly Father’s guidance into our lives every day, we will gain the patience, love, and strength to teach our children about Him and His ways.
Let us establish a firm foundation with our children, building their lives on the rock of faith so they may follow Him—our Lord, our Savior, and our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. By keeping His commandments and honoring our covenants with Him, we can guide our children toward a life of steadfast discipleship.
